Studio Spotlight #1

“When you start working, everybody is in your studio- the past, your friends, enemies, the art world, and above all, your own ideas- all are there. But as you continue painting, they start leaving, one by one, and you are left completely alone. Then, if you are lucky, even you leave.”
-John Cage

My favorite moment when I begin painting is the light. I love natural light - the way it brightens the paper giving life to my pencil lines. My main medium is watercolors. I love the way water and paint move together - the colors formed from the layered paints; the elements of brush stroke, transparency and water overlapping one another.

The lotus flower and heart are the subjects of my paintings. Recently, I've been inspired by the different shapes of the Chakra symbols. In particular, the inverted triangle of the Root Chakra. I love how this shape suggests the flow of energy. From funneling the energy down to the tip, the sides of the triangle redirects the energy up. The tip of the triangle is where spiritual awakening begins; then expanding into a higher level of consciousness.

The watercolors posted on this entry are my latest pieces. My interest in adding new shapes and using different colors to my paintings gives way to new designs and compositions.

Step Into Spring

“It's spring fever. That is what the name of it is. And when you've got it, you want—oh, you don't quite know what it is you do want, but it just fairly makes your heart ache, you want it so!” - Mark Twain

Spring is in the air. The days are getting longer and the air is warmer. The light is golden and summery. I love the fresh scent of a spring morning. The sweet fragrance of the earth and the vivid colors of nature awakens my senses.

This transition from our winter months to warmer days sparks fresh ideas for new projects. I feel energized and more receptive for new beginnings. I have the urge to spring clean and purge, to start fresh.

Springtime provokes my youthful spirit to surface. Lingering thoughts of adventure and hopeful aspirations are new promises I make to myself. I love Spring, anything is possible.
What do you like most about Spring?

Blue:  |bloo|  noun.  the pure color of a clear sky; the primary color between green and violet
in the visible spectrum, an effect of light with a wavelength between 450 and 500 nm.

I love the color blue. Blue reminds me of the sea. I love to sit by the water and watch the waves. The sea is a moving blue gem. It can be smooth like glass or rough, jagged swells. Like the ocean, the color blue can be soft and subtle or dark and mysterious. Blue makes me feel calm, expansive and inspired. What does the color blue bring up for you?
